Also considered the title "With All the Time and Frustration This Involved, It Shouldn't Look Quite so Shitty".
Bjork, though that may be hard to see. I loved this photo of her when I first saw it, as I thought it captured her sort of playful, quirky side. However, a friend (when seeing the original photo) thought she looked frightened; as if she were hiding behind her hands. Now that I've completed this rendition, I see that the charcoal seems to bring out that darker side of the photograph--a more frightening air. I think there is now a bit of mystery to the piece, that each person may see it differently (ie, view it as playful, scared, whatever else they may come up with)...I like that.
However, I'm really not too pleased with the piece myself. I sort of rushed myself to finish it up, as I was becoming increasingly frustrated with myself whilst working on it. Basically, I just wanted it to be over with. The hands look crazy as fuck to me, and her eyes seem off...I'm just not very content with it overall. But now, at least, I can move on.
Any and all criticism is welcome. I'm still trying to figure out this media, and since I haven't had anyone to show me the ropes, advice would be appreciated.
I think that most of the piece's darkness comes from the force you used in doing the countours of the hands and face; her hands, for example, seem emaciated and withered, so right away I felt a dark presence in the picture. On that note, your realism is splendid and attention to detail marvelous, although it is easy to see that you aren't that familiar with charcoal (the heavy-handed strokes, a rather slim gradient from dark to-not-quite-as-dark-but-still-dark). However, it is still very, as it were, cool, and I give it two of my three thumbs up
Thanks muchly for the comments.
As you noted, I'm not all too familiar with charcoal--really it was just something I decided to try on the spur of the moment once. Bought a few supplies and just messed around with it. I'm not really in the position to afford art school, so I'm just doing what I can and hoping to come across an individual eventually to show me how to go about it properly.
Anyway, thanks again.
Cheers,
Jess
